New River Gorge Curse from Louder Than 11 on Vimeo.

http://www.facebook.com/louderthan11
http://www.twitter.com/louderthan11
Louder Than 11 traveled to the New River Gorge in West Virginia in December of 2009 to explore the potential that the area had to offer. The mission: Develop exciting and hard boulder problems along the New River in the Blue Hole Sector of the Gorge. Follow Nate Draughn, Jon Glassberg, and Carlo Traversi as they wage war with the CURSE of high water, injury, and devastating snow storms.

I love making videos. The more I learn and get into every aspect of it (save for the business/money side of things) the more I love it. I also love creative challenges–projects that push me to learn new skills and try new things and come out with something that expands the LT11 cannon. I often have delusions of grandeur during the initial planning stages of a project because I’ve found its better to go big and come away with something smaller in scope than to dive into a project with shallow depth. (I even have a scar to prove you shouldn’t be diving head first into shallow depths) This particular project was supposed to be something entirely different when we first came up with the idea. Its an idea that we still plan to produce but probably won’t see the light of release until the end of this year. I was very excited about producing the original idea this go round and it was very hard for me to let that go and concede to the fact that all kinds of unavoidable obstacles where in the way and there wasn’t really a way around them this time. All these projects are in part personal expressions of our creativity. We get really attached to the creative vision and its stressful–even emotionally painful–when your passion gets deferred. It all starts when you start re-writing ideas to appease sponsors. It snowballs when bad weather and record breaking snow storms make climbing/shooting video an impossibility. It peaks and ends when your contingency plan falls through because athlete schedules and sponsor budgets don’t line up for the correct dates. What you end up with is a lump sum of time, money and video footage invested in a project that never came to fruition. So now your presented with a new creative challenge: How do you pull a story out of this?

This is what we came away with:

First in, First Out (V7) – Jon Glassberg FA
Denim (V6) – Nate Draughn FA
Bustin’ Down The Door (V8/9) – Carlo Traversi FA
Royal Blue (V8) – Nate Draughn FA

All I can really say about the project is: It’s finally OVER! Jordan Shipman and I spent WAY to much time planning, shooting, climbing, and just plain old busting our asses for this short video about the New River Gorge bouldering. We planned for this video to be feature length, epic, and just plain awesome but we ran into some serious trouble along the way. This video is about the CURSE that we were faced with on our trip and despite our best efforts, nothing really went as planned. Regardless, Carlo, Nate and I were able to put up some really great first ascents and certainly wont forget the experience. EVER.

■Grão de Bico

Grão de Bico from NorteBouldering on Vimeo.

It may be a block synthesis of a whole area? If yes, for the Horn of nozzle block is the Chickpeas.

High, hard, brittle and high quality level of the movement. These are the main characteristics of this block and are also the characteristics of the Horn of Spout. By the type of prey is the most common régletes and crystals.

Four arrested in four meters and a handful of crystals in the output are enough to climb to the top of this block, which also has a unique feature: lift your foot off the ground is already hard a desperate situation and that attests to the purity of the line itself .

The Boot on two opposite régletes is explosive, but compensated with the arrival of prey, a handle, which is not worth much to stop because it follows a dynamic one that is perfect réglete must run in deadpoint . Having won the réglete reaches to the exit, which negotiates with crystals well separated from each other, a situation already well air. A folding hard decision and thus mark the end of this block anthology. An entire program to a block chained open and as always the great explorer of the area: Julio Braga. SM

Two years ago, I slipped in snow at the top of this cliff and tore an ACL, but I just thought it was sprained. I was by myself and couldn't walk on it, but luckily I had a parachute to get down. After a couple of months of ice and ibuprofen, it got mostly better.

But that knee was always a little weird after that and seemed to get tweaked a lot, and there were a few things it didn't really do.

My brother finally made me go to a doctor to get it checked last summer...no ACL! I got a double bundle hamstring graft last November.

I have a brand new knee ligament and it works great :)

The first base jump back is exciting....

■Myles of Earl

Myles of Earl from steph davis on Vimeo.
Out in the Utah desert in the Dirty Devil Wash is a secret canyon. Robber's Roost was one of Butch Cassidy's cattle rustling hideouts, inaccessible on horseback except by one trail. Remnants of his shelters still remain, along with ancient petroglyphs on the rock walls.

Just above Robber's Roost, a 600 foot cliff drops straight down to the river bed. Base jumpers can escape by climbing out a narrow slot canyon.

Jumpers, who spend much of our time eluding Park Rangers and unfriendly Native American tribes, can be safe here in the inhospitable desert and jump without persecution. It's an outlaws' paradise.

The jump is named "Myles of Earl" in honor of a jumper and pilot who spotted this cliff from the air while searching for remote walls, and later died in a plane crash over the canyonlands of Utah.

We will be updating videos live from the field featuring a bad-ass international roster of athletes including: Emily Harrington, Sam Elias, Daniel Woods, Yuji Hiriyama, Eneko Pou, James Person and Renan Ozturk.

In this first installment the crew makes the initial journey and gets psyched for the adventure to come.

Getting into the swing of things! Three days of non-stop hard climbing and shooting has pretty much smoked every muscle in our bodies. In this dispatch Sam, Emily and Daniel have back to back sends (climber speak for successful ascents!) of "Freedom is a Battle" 5.13+. We wanted to give you some raw action in this installment and get a bit more warmed up to high-angle shooting. It is clear that the limestone here is unique to the world...but what about the culture? Stay tuned for the next dispatch on the amazing scene here..the local climbers, markets and vibe that drive the adventure.

■Origins - Joshua Tree

Welcome to our new series "Origins" -- a fun video concept developed with the crew at Evolv Shoes, and also sponsored by Mountain Gear. "Origins" focuses on climbing's rich history, following top athletes of today as they team up with their heroes from the past, and attempt to climb the iconic (and iconoclastic) routes of earlier generations.

The First "Origins" episode features two climbing stars: Kurt Smith, who put up some badass routes in Joshua Tree in 1988, and Chris Lindner, who was sending 5.12 routes when he was 5 years old. In this "Origins" episode, Chris sets out to climb Kurts slab test-piece on The Dunce Cap, UNREPEATED for 22 years -- right in the heart of J-Tree climbing.

Directed by Rob Frost, and filmed by Frost with Russell Holcomb, this is a short film about Chris journey to do the second ascent of this forgotten Joshua Tree classic.

Stay tuned for more "Origins" episodes online and on the 2010 REEL ROCK Film Tour.
