"It was exactly what I was looking for - a route that would demand a new levels of dedication, physical strength, and mental fortitude from me. It was of course frustrating, ego-crushing, and difficult throughout, but in the end it was a dream come true. I named the route 'Le Reve', meaning 'The Dream' in French."

Hueco Trip 2010 from Yolanda Chen on Vimeo.

Team Saucisson sets out on yet another adventure! We left the cool and crisp Mid-West and landed in the warm and sunny town of El Paso, TX for a four day bouldering trip to Hueco Tanks. Scott and Christian were the only ones to have previously experienced the bouldering in Hueco. The rest of us were astounded to see what Hueco had to offer. The boulders, some the size of school buses, others the size of skyscrapers, are pocked with millions of huecos, created during a magma eruption 35 million years ago. This creation offered us boundless classic lines - highballs, caves, roofs...you name it! We were like kids in a candy store for four days, savoring in the beauty that surrounded us every chance we got.

Credit to Quentin Tarantino film "Kill Bill" and the movie soundtrack for the inspiration in the creation of this parody.

Climbing as Therapy with Whitney Boland – presented by Sterling Rope from sterling rope on Vimeo.

In this video Whitney Boland talks about her life in Chattanooga, her relationship with a chronic disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) as well as her relationship to climbing. For many people climbing is a form of therapy for Whitney that has taken on a whole new meaning.

Whitney Boland has been on the Sterling Rope team for years, she originally joined in 2005. In addition to Climbing she loves to travel and is an accomplished writer. She has been published in Rock and Ice magazine and numerous other print and on-line publications such as Women’s Health, Aspen magazine, Climbing magazine and Rocky Mountain Sports just to name a few.

Follow along in this video series filmed and edited by Joey Kinder with help from his wonderful girlfriend Collette as they travel the globe connecting with some of the best climbers in the world who, like him, have all chosen Sterling Rope.

Alizée Dufraisse: La Reina Mora 8c+/9a FFA from Prana Living on Vimeo.

Alizée Dufraisse, who climbed her first 8c+, Pati noso, not long ago, has now pushed it half a notch further by doing La Reina Mora, 8c+/9a, at Siurana. The route is in the same sector, El Pati, as Pati noso, so it would seem this wall suits her quite well! This was of course the first female ascent. There has, after all, not been that many female ascents at this level. So few in fact that you can count the number of women who have climbed anything harder than 8c+ on one hand, even if you were to have lost a digit (or maybe even two). La Reina Mora was originally given 8c/+ by Ramon Julian Puigblanque but has later been upgraded first by Nico Favresse who suggested 8c+ and then by Dani Andrada who thought it was at least 8c+/9a, maybe even 9a.

FAR♣AWAY

FAR♣AWAY from √an Lu on Vimeo.

One more...

Do not glorify the achievers
So the people will not squabble
Do not treasure goods that are hard to obtain
So the people will not become thieves
Do not show the desired things
So their hearts will not be confused

Thus the governance of the sage:
Empties their hearts
Fills their bellies
Weakens their ambitions
Strengthens their bones

Let the people have no cunning and no greed
So those who scheme will not dare to meddle

Act without contrivance
And nothing will be beyond control

The Tao is empty
When utilized, it is not filled up
So deep! It seems to be the source of all things

It blunts the sharpness
Unravels the knots
Dims the glare
Mixes the dusts

So indistinct! It seems to exist
I do not know whose offspring it is
Its image is the predecessor of the Emperor

Monique Forestier first visited the Verdon Gorge, France, in 2007. Gazing across at the far side of the gorge she became captivated by an extraordinary line which follows a single "tufa" line for most of the 60-metre route. It is called "Tom et je Ris" (8b+). Time and conditions didn't allow her to seriously try it that trip but it gave her plenty to dream about for the next few years. She finally returned in October 2011 and as her daughter would say, "I did it!".

La Obsesión - A film about Dani Andrada from Haroun Souirji on Vimeo.

"When I was asked to make a video about Dani Andrada, at first I was super psyched and was looking forward to shooting it. Then, I realized that I had never filmed sport climbing, or even taken my camera on a rope (except to film a highball) and that I would not have time to try even once before going there. So I went to Catalunya not knowing what to except and quite nervous about screwing up while on the rope... Now that I am back, I only want to try shooting routes again!

If you are looking for a pure action video, this is not what this is. This is more of a 'video illustrated interview'. If you want to know more about Dani and his motivations, you are at the right place :-)

Dani has a strong reputation and all I can say is that he is as motivated as you would expect him to be. He is either climbing or bolting, or doing both in a day. He just never stops. And on top of that he is a genuine good person spending most of his non climbing time rebolting older routes to keep Siurana safe.

Weather was not kind with us, having fog, rain and very strong winds but it gave us some very intense tries in Siurana (sorry for the shakiness in La Rambla but I could not fight such wind...). And like Dani says, if you can do it in bad conditions, you will feel stronger when conditions get better..."

PS: the video was shot and edited in a very wide cinema aspect ratio. This is a test to see how well it could fit climbing. I couldn't stress enough that it looks best on a real TV so if you have a nice, big flat screen at home, download the movie (link on the right) and watch it there!

THE SHADOW from Sonnie Trotter on Vimeo.

Do you remember your first, 5.9? 5.11? 5.13? Last summer I captured my friends first 5.13 on video.

The EPIC Shadow pitch of the Stawamus Chief is one of the most dramatic rock features on the planet.

Located in Squamish BC, the Shadow has an honest reputation for being intimidating. Rated 5.13 it can be described as a single hand to finger sized crack which is tucked into a steep dihedral extending for over 150 feet into the summer sky. The Shadow was cemented into North American Climbing history when legendary stone master Peter Croft first freed the route in 1988, onsight. Since then it's only been repeated a handful of times.

In this video big bad rad Jesse Huey from Seattle/Boulder battles up the double overhanging corners using grit, tenacity and imagination. His first attempt took 40 minutes before slipping off near the top. His successful burn, 3 hours later, with a pair of lucky shoes, took 45.

Join Jesse on his journey to the chains, from arm barring chimneys and finger-tip laybacks, to pure friction stemming, Jesse uses everything he has. Be sure to take notice of the massive rack on his harness during the opening scene, and also keep an eye open for his palm sweating catch at 6:50, and for the fall at 7:20.

On his second burn, as he nears the anchor at 9:40 watch for the tiny nut that falls out before he clips the ancient and suspect pin (yikes), and of course, enjoy his moment in the sun when he realizes his first 5.13 EVER, is non other than the World Class "Shadow" pitch of the University Wall.

Hydrotherapy from Liam Cook on Vimeo.

Filmed in the sumer of 2011 this film follows Neil Gresham, one of the UK's most prominent all round professional rock climbers, as he embarks on one of the most challenging routes of his career, 'Hydrotherapy'.

'Hydrotherapy' takes the line of greatest steepness through the soaring, gothic architecture of Hollow Caves Bay in Pembroke, Wales. Climbing rope-less with only the sea to catch him, Neil could only safely attempt the route during a high, spring tide when the water would sufficiently cover the jagged reefs below. Discovering that the cave would remain wet until an hour before sunset meant that this tide had to rise precisely at the right time. When the sun was low enough in the sky, the face would be bathed in an incredible golden light and the moisture, burnt away.

So, the seas had to be calm, the weather, mild, and he had to have someone on hand to fish him out in case of emergency. Even getting to the base of the route presented problems which required an unusual and creative approach. As if to add insult to injury, the cliff falls within a restricted area of land, controlled by the military. Several attempts were thwarted by the unpredictable closure of this land, exacerbating a sense of frustration, made keener by the wasted 500mile return trips from London.

So when the illusive window of opportunity finally creaked ajar, Neil had to be ready to climb something at his physical limit. The resulting experience surely had to be one of the most cathartic and memorable of his life.

It has been my pleasure to try and capture it.

Thank you,

Liam Cook

The Dark Horse - Chapter 1 from Louder Than 11 on Vimeo.

As mortal creatures, our time on this small planet is fleeting. The very presence of our being is but a spec of dust recklessly hurdling deeper and deeper into the universe's infinite abyss of space. As we all together tear through the boundless black cloak of night, we often lose ourselves in the doldrums of our monotonous existence. Sometimes we become lost--unable to find ourselves. A long, long time ago, one man knew this and decided to make a change. He realized that in order to truly live, one must test the actual machinery of the human soul--the very fabric that bears the quintessential language of a beating heart. He figured that since there is no guarantee for tomorrow, one must live for today. And so began the quest for the Dark Horse...

Kate Reese McGinnis: Holding On from Prana Living on Vimeo.

Climbing and parenting: a balance between hanging on and letting go. Climbing seems simple enough: grip too hard and you'll pump out early. If you don't put enough effort into it, you'll never make it to the end. Kate has spent over a decade fine-tuning that balance between holding on and letting go. Now with the birth of her first child Annie, she finds the same lessons in parenthood: Suddenly you are two people, dependent on each other, but each with a lifetime of dreams and aspirations ahead of them. You have to hold on, but not too tight. Seems simple enough.
