BD athlete Chris Schulte early spring bouldering in Colorado's high country from Black Diamond Equipment on Vimeo.

Black Diamond athlete Chris Schulte recently sent us this video and report of his early season bouldering forays into the Colorado high country. Nice to see the trees budding, the snow melting and boulders drying out! The video was shot a couple months ago, and now the alpine bouldering season is in full swing.
==========================================================================================

Winter has moved on, and the infrequent snowstorms that passed through the Front Range have given way to spring showers, feeding green shoots and tiny buds, washing the chalk off the lowland grips and intermittently confining one to a rest day or a gym session. As the seasons revolve along, the sun burns away the tiny amounts of snow we got up here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and with the exception of a wild winter wind having deposited some unusual drifts here and there, the alpine season is starting up quickly and nicely.

It’s always a treat to head up into the higher zones at the beginning of each new season: the journey takes one through a few different layers in the climatic strata, down roads often travelled but not seen for many months. It’s a nostalgic trip, and the familiarity of the roads and trails sets a pace and a mood for the day. Early in the season, the journey is just as valuable as the climbing, if not more so.

The first forays are little reconaissance sorties into the middle layers, the roadside sectors of the mountains, like Guanella Pass or the Bear Lake Road. With that, a good guess for what’s going on up high helps you pack up and head out for a full day of what amounts to alpine climbing with a pad. These little trips are, for me, a grounding experience, and I can take this time to try and repeat established problems, to re-set my counter a little for the coming months of hiking and hunting new lines.

With the wild weather up there, it can be like stepping out into space, high up, just below treeline, with the winds blowing and the sun shining, or the snow turning to rain, turning to hail, and moving on.

The warmer it gets, the higher we go. The passes and roads to some of the best bouldering in the U.S. are opening, week by week, and another season is beginning in some of my favorite places, higher and higher up in the mountains, further and further afield.

Mark Pugh-Williams climbs one of the hardest routes in New Zealand from Simon Waterhouse on Vimeo.

Climbing around Christchurch has been challenging since the series of large earthquakes that devastated the city. Access to crags has been difficult, and some of the most popular crags have become unclimbable.

Despite that, Christchurch climber Mark Pugh-Williams has recently become only the second Kiwi to climb grade 33 in New Zealand (including overseas ascents, just five Kiwis have climbed the grade.) Kaz's Project is one of the hardest sport-routes in NZ, with only two other routes at the same grade.

Marks shows no sign of stopping there - with every indication he's capable of more, Mark's progress in the future will be interesting to watch - first Kiwi to climb 9a?

Little Days Out, A Summer in Colorado: Part 1 from mina leslie-wujastyk on Vimeo.

A few classic lines from around alpine Colorado-
Tommy's Arete V9- RMNP
Shot Tower V5- Lincoln Lake
Seurat V8- Mount Evans

This is the first of a few videos we are going to make of our climbing trip this summer. Classic lines, cool problems and maybe even some hard ones if we get up some! These three lines were all great to climb: Tommy's arete was powerful and burly; Shot Tower was easy but scary; Seurat is a stunning feature making tenuous and difficult climbing!

Little Days Out, A Summer in Colorado: Part 2 from mina leslie-wujastyk on Vimeo.

A hot, hot day at Lincoln Lake proves successful, after a big fight Phobos (V10) was put to rest and a night time send of Unshackled (V9) finished the day off nicely. Just the walk out now.....

Little Days Out, A Summer in Colorado: Part 3 from mina leslie-wujastyk on Vimeo.

It has been pretty warm in the park recently so Upper and Lower Chaos have been the best places to climb due to the higher elevation. This video shows Gang Bang arete, a small but very hard V8; Skipper D, a long V8 with a satisfying heel move to a pinch; Sunspot, a classic V10 that demands a jump at the end; and finally Terrorism Arete, one of the most stunning lines I have seen so far.

Choke Hold (V10) at Independance Pass, Colorado. from mina leslie-wujastyk on Vimeo.

It is too hot to climb in the Park or at Mount Evans so a two day trip to Independance Pass serves as a nice break. Rain and humid conditions meant that we didn't get to climb too much but what we saw was excellent and we will definitely be returning in colder times.
Here is a short video of Choke Hold a V10 put up by Chris Schulte, luckily it stayed dry in the rain storm although the wet top out made for some exciting times. Burly, strung out tension climbing revolving around one of the best pinches on granite makes this one of my favourite climbs from the trip.

Documentary about bouldering in Forêt de Fontainebleau.

The practice of bouldering is a complex combination of sport- and play values. On the hand joy and freedom are promoted, on the other hand there is a history of regulation and competition within the boulder community. Debates and ethical dilemmas arise in practice. One of them is illustrated in this movie. Namely the case of The Island, opened by Dave Graham in 2008.

Starring: Jo Montchaussé, Lucas Menegatti, Bart van Raaij and Jean-Pierre Roudneff.

Wild Country Crack School - Episode 1 - Finger Cracks - By Tom Randall And Pete Whittaker from Wild Country on Vimeo.

Wild Country ‘Crack School’ is a series of six short videos designed to utilise the skills and knowledge of Wild Country climbers Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker to give an introduction to basics of crack climbing. Over six episodes the guys cover all widths of crack: Fingers, Hands, Fists and Offwidths as well as looking at the skills of gear placement and taping up.
Designed for those who know next to nothing about crack climbing and who want to make their first steps, the videos are made to illustrate what the guys think are the most pertinent points for starting out on each size of crack. They look at how to use hands and feet in the crack as well as gear and overall tips on technique and the way to approach each type of crack.
Importantly, and often overlooked, is the fact that these ‘crack’ techniques not only allow you to climb routes defined as cracks but this new knowledge makes you a more rounded climber. So if faced with a short section of crack, or a corner or groove you have an armoury and variety of ways of placing your hands to keep you going. These techniques therefore are incredibly important if you are making a transition from indoors to out, when holds move from ‘sticking out’ to ‘going in’ and thrusting, poking, camming and jamming become more important than simply grabbing and pulling. ¬
As Tom Randall says: ‘Crack climbing well is a fantastic feeling and learning how to climb cracks opens up a world of routes, and indeed some of the best routes in the world: from Brown and Whillans’ classics in the UK (try doing Cenotaph Corner or the Sloth without being able to jam) through to Yosemite and Indian Creek in the USA. And remember, the best climbers always have a variety of techniques at their disposal and having a variety of techniques always makes you a better climber!!’

This week Tom looks at taping up - an essential skill as you move through the grades - and especially if you're on a trip the golden rule is that prevention is better than cure. It only takes a minute to destroy your skin but can take days and days to repair, harming your chances on other routes and possibly ruining your trip.
