Culminating in Ben Spannuth’s FA of one of the world’s highest elevation 5.14s, ABYSS opens the floodgates of passionate debate within the climbing community.

In September of 2011 we hit the road in Lax (my not so trusty ole '82 Granville) and headed south from Portland to run the Rogue River, climb Mt. Shasta, and visit Yosemite enroute to Bishop where we would settle for the fall. This film documents our time in Bishop, bouldering. The hope was to show "the rest of us" climbing, the way it feels to all of us. Climbing is a deeply relative sport, with effort, challenge, and pain tied directly between the individual and the climb itself.

During the time we were in Bishop, filming COMMIT, we worked with the utterly awesome www.AccessFund.org, and www.FriendsOfTheInyo.org to build steps, clean up camping areas, and reconstruct trails throughout the bouldering areas. Hydrotherapy - Pembroke Deep Water Solo

Filmed in the sumer of 2011 this film follows Neil Gresham, one of the UK's most prominent all round professional rock climbers, as he embarks on one of the most challenging routes of his career, 'Hydrotherapy'.

'Hydrotherapy' takes the line of greatest steepness through the soaring, gothic architecture of Hollow Caves Bay in Pembroke, Wales. Climbing rope-less with only the sea to catch him, Neil could only safely attempt the route during a high, spring tide when the water would sufficiently cover the jagged reefs below. Discovering that the cave would remain wet until an hour before sunset meant that this tide had to rise precisely at the right time. When the sun was low enough in the sky, the face would be bathed in an incredible golden light and the moisture, burnt away.

So, the seas had to be calm, the weather, mild, and he had to have someone on hand to fish him out in case of emergency. Even getting to the base of the route presented problems which required an unusual and creative approach. As if to add insult to injury, the cliff falls within a restricted area of land, controlled by the military. Several attempts were thwarted by the unpredictable closure of this land, exacerbating a sense of frustration, made keener by the wasted 500mile return trips from London.

So when the illusive window of opportunity finally creaked ajar, Neil had to be ready to climb something at his physical limit. The resulting experience surely had to be one of the most cathartic and memorable of his life.

Already in 2010, the climber Elie Chevieux discovered a wonderful BigWall in the Indian region of Kinnaur. This year he decided to return to the impressive wall and establish a new route with Yannick Boissenot and the Mammut Proteam athlete Giovanni Quirici, who, sadly, recently lost his life. After two months in India, three weeks in the base camp and only three days of fine weather, the team was able to climb a 700-meter long route including several passages with a difficult rating of 7 leading up to the 4,700-meter high peak. This film was shot in memory of the extraordinary Mammut climbing athlete Giovanni Quirici...

Bronx Rock Invitational 2007

The BRI was the first climbing competition that gave route setting, THE crucial element of any comp, back into the hands of the climbers. In 2007 we invited eight of the strongest, but very different German climbers to put up their own problems and climb them afterwards. Read on for our German:

Jeder der acht Teilnehmer bekam einen Wandteil im weitläufigen Bronx Rock Boulderbereich zugelost, an dem er mit einem für jeden Teilnehmer gleichen Set von 30 Bleaustone Griffen innerhalb von einer Stunde sein Boulderproblem schrauben musste. Das Schrauben war für den Wettbewerb viel wichtiger, spannender und für die Teilnehmer anstrengender als wir es erwartet hätten. Unter den Augen des Publikums entstanden acht völlig unterschiedliche Probleme, die teilweise übrigens in der Bronx Rock Kletterhalle weiterhin von jederman probiert werden können.




Im Anschluss erfolgte eine Analyse der Boulder auf der Videoleinwand im Gespräch mit den Teilnehmern und Fachleuten, was den Zuschauern die Möglichkeit gab in bisher nicht gekannten Maße in die Komplexität des Boulderns einzusteigen. Danach wurden die acht gesetzten Probleme im offenen Modus von den Teilnehmern versucht zu klettern. Bewertet wurde dabei nicht nur die sportliche Leistung, sondern auch der Style und die Kreativität beim Schrauben, also der beste Boulder. Wer sein eigenes Problem nicht klettern konnte bekam 3 Punkte abgezogen, eine Flashbegehung brachte 2 Punkte, eine „normale" Begehung einen Punkt...




Gerade frisch aus La Reunion hereingeschwebt dominierte Jonas Baumann das Bronx Rock Invitational 2007 und bestätigte dass er im Moment Deutschlands #1 am Plastik ist. Zielstrebig und konzentriert bebaute er seinen Wandteil #8 mit einem sehr attraktiven, modernen Bewegungsproblem. Modern heisst in diesem Zusammenhang, dass keine dezidierten Tritte geschraubt werden und die Bewegungen deshalb dynamisch und raumgreifend sind. Als einziger kletterte Jonas seine #8. Zweiter wurde der bärenstarke Andre Borowka, der überdies eine interessante taktische Variante beim Schrauben einführte. Andre war Wandteil # 2 zugelost worden. Er schraubte gute Zwischengriffe in die Wand, tastete sich mit ihrer Hilfe an den Schlüsselzug heran und entfernte die Griffe dann wieder. Eine taktische Finesse die wir beim nächsten Bronx Rock Invitational wohl öfters sehen werden. Andre kletterte seine #2, was ausser ihm nur noch Jonas gelang.




Wie bereits erwähnt war die Atmosphäre beim Schrauben sehr intensiv. Es zahlte sich aus, einen klaren Kopf und ein Konzept zu haben. Wahrscheinlich auch deshalb landete Maxi Klaus mit solider Kletterkunst und einem klaren puristischen Problem auf dem dritten Platz. Drei Teilnehmer könnten ihr eigenes Problem leider nicht klettern, was ihren Erfolg innerhalb dieses Modus natürlich zunichte machte. Als schönstes Problem wählten die Teilnehmer Chrissi Benks #6, knapp vor Maxis #5.
Zusammenfassend war das Bronx Rock Invitational 2007 bei Teilnehmern und Publikum ein voller Erfolg. Einhellig waren alle der Meinung das dieser Modus sehr interessante Bewerbe ermöglicht, bei denen der Gewinner auf faire, und für das Publikum sehr attraktive Art ermittelt wird.

Lincoln Lake GIANTS!

Lincoln Lake GIANTS is a story about climbing in the high country of Colorado. Mt. Evans is a world renowned bouldering destination and the newest development has been at Lincoln Lake near the summit of the 14,000 Ft Mountain.

In Chapter 1, we witness our heroes braving the rugged tundra of Mt. Evans to clash heatedly with the most inspiring blocks of granite they can find. Unbeknownst to them, large, ill-spirited residents of the lake lurk nearby. In Chapter 2, our heroes again seek boulders to conquer, mauling their skin and spilling blood on the way to their noble achievements! Following the grisly discovery of a certain boney pelvis, they realize there is more to Lincoln Lake than they could have ever imagined. Chapter 3 portrays our heroes slaying yet more classic boulders! Sadly, the slayers become the slain, as a resident Giant (of the Lincoln Lake species) begins terrorizing the unlucky climbers. Much blood is shed from our heroes’ shapely, toned bodies. Even so, their deaths arrive awash in honor, ridden with glory.

In Chapter 4, our two remaining climbers experience a massive resurgence of psych, even in the wake of their friends’ atrocious murders. The surrounding boulders are simply too enticing. And fortunately for one of our heroes, even a member of the vicious race of Lincoln Lake Giant can display forgivable amicability.
