Alizée Dufraisse: Just My Style from Prana Living on Vimeo.

I started climbing when I was 8 years old on the legendary French cliffs in Verdon, Buoux. At the age of 15, I had sent my first 8b+ (Putain Putain) and had become a climbing Junior World Champion. I decided to take a break from climbing so I could devote myself completely to the pole vault as it was something that I was really excited about. I vaulted for 3 years and became champion of France only to realize that climbing was my means of expression and a lifestyle that suits me. I can not live without climbing. Traveling, meeting new people, learning and challenging myself is the life I want. I have improved my climbing abilities (multiple 8c & a 8a block) and competition results (3rd in the European Championships - Imst). Ceus & Spain are the places where I feel the best climbing and want o be more often. I discovered Bishop in the U.S. and Smith Rock and they are a different world! Now I want to discover more climbing hot spots in the United States. I think I can still push myself, to express my passions at an even higher level and push my limits!

Anna Stöhr's way through the (semi-) Finals towards being bouldering world champion 2011. Unlike at the BWCs, the organizers made it difficult to film for anybody who didn't pay for TV rights. We hope you'll enjoy this little clip nevertheless!
The Arco World Championships was a two faced affair, at least concerning the bouldering. On the bright side was solid route setting, stunning performances and the realization how high the standard is meanwhile, especially in countries that usually don't compete in the world cups (for many reasons). On the dark side we an arrogant organization that was unable to cope with the many competitors and clearly not interested in bouldering at all. Lets start with the bright side though!

We have 2 well-deserved winners!
Bouldering World Championships have their own rule, one is, "they all boulder well, and in the end a russian boy wins!" (as it has been from 2005 on). When Rustam Gelmanov and Dmitry Sharafutdinov executed their first problems in the semis it became clear to all their competitors that they intended to write this rule in stone.
The same is not quite true for the girls, but how Yana Chereshneva and Olga Bibik managed to show this year's best performances when it is the most important is a secret all other athletes and coaches would like to know! They both climbed easier into the final than ... Anna, who was on the brink of repeating "the best unsuccessful climbing you can possibly see" as in Sheffield and Barcelona. In the semis she cruised problem 1-3 only to be stopped with the delicate match on problem #4. The semis were again dominated by Jule Wurm who is clearly the strongest female climber around without a mayor title!

The cards are re-shuffled (at least for the non-russians)
Anna Stöhr, who just had had one of her darkest moments when she couldn't do problem #4 in the semis was a different person in the finals and put up an almost flawless performance. She was the undisputed winner in the finals. Second became the very well climbing Sasha Digiulian, who apparently benefited from the rather conventional route setting and, most of all, not expecting too much! That seemed to be the problem of Jule, who temporarily lost her Mojo in the finals and ended up on third place. The tragic hero of the finals though was Akiyo Noguchi who, on problem #1, forgot everything she knows about bouldering! In the world cups Akiyo always has been "the girls without nerves" - but here in Arco, on that Sunday afternoon ... well, we are all human beings and no machines after all!
That is, except Dmitry! Hindered only by the weird politics of his home country to give Kilian a run for the world cup, he was in every second and on every problem the alpha male of the comp and became world champion for the second time after 2007. Rustam also kept on climbing brilliantly but had to let Adam Ondra pass and took the bronze medal. And how about Kilian? A Akiyoesque Mojo loss I would say! The most successful competition climber of all times has to wait for his first world championship title till next year in Paris. Good luck, Kilian!

"If water is scarce, drink less and it will last longer"
- Angelo Seneci, MC of the Arco Rockmaster and apparently put into the position of a feudalistic
emperor for these world championships, when being informed that there is not enough water in the isolation zone.
I'm not psyched to write about the dark aspects of this event and not interested in all the politics, but if Arco was a glimpse into what happens if climbing becomes Olympic - sign me out! Angelo's quote pretty much sums his personality up, for him the athletes are just the ticket for selling TV rights. It was heart wrenching to see competitors from countries like Peru or Iran arriving 2 minutes late at their problem, misguided by the over-extended personnel, while Angelo chased competitors off places he thinks they don't belong. That happened for example to Anna just after winning and taking place at the always empty "VIP" seats.
All of Angelo's efforts to put up a good show and to sell TV rights with it of course brings our sport forward, who knows if the next great climber wasn't in front of a TV, getting inspired by what he/she saw?
That the IFSC gave Angelo full reign over their championships though is a sign of weakness in my book though, lets hope that future championships will be about sport first and TV events second!

Why We Climb Trailer from Viper Studios, Inc. on Vimeo.

From Climberism Magazine...
Everyone knows there is a lot of pain and suffering involved with climbing — ridiculously tight shoes, horrible food, heavy gear, long approaches. Waging wars with the natural environmental and tackling hurdles when the hands of god himself squeeze ever last droplet of liquid from your body is the hard reality of climbing sometimes.

What inspires us to climb is different for everyone, but somehow we find common ground that connects us to the sport we love — the memories, the adventure, the growth, near misses with death. Jason Nower says he created the small documentary — Why We Climb — to highlight the “Deeper purpose of climbing within people’s lives.” The short trailer does a good job at creating something we all experience when we climb, a connection with ourselves and the people we climb with. “I don’t expect any one to answer the question “why do we climb?”, because I don’t know anyone that knows. But rather the answer to the question is the documentary, something that is more than words, or a sound bite; to give the audience an experience I believe is the best answer to such a question. ”

So what makes you a climber? When did you realize it and how did you feel once you made the connection? We challenge you to answer these questions and determine what made you a climber and why!

IFSC Bouldering World Cup 2011 | Sheffield from Ed Ratcliffe [Slender Films] on Vimeo.

Last weekend in Sheffield the Austrian Kilian Fischhuber assured the World Cup 2011 with his 5th victory, which brought him to 560 points in the 2011 ranking - with his direct rival Sharafutdinov following at 430, and one competition left to close the Boulder World Cup 2011.
Second on the podium Cedric Lachat (SUI), third the Russian Alexey Rubtsov, with respectively 5 and 13 attempts to complete 2 problems.
Gold in the women's field was awarded to Akiyo Noguchi (JPN), at her 4th victory of the year; nevertheless, Anna Stöhr (6th in Sheffield) remains at the top of the 2011 ranking. Silver goes to the French Melissa Le Neve, and bronze to Alex Puccio (USA).
The Boulder World Cup will be back with the final competition in Munich in August; but all the best climbers will gather in two weeks in Arco for the IFSC World Championship...

The penultimate round of the IFSC Boulder World Cup hit Sheffield on the 2nd and 3rd July 2011. The competition took place as part of the Cliffhanger festival and the women's finals were held on the Sunday.

Lincoln Lake GIANTS! from Louder Than 11 on Vimeo.

Lincoln Lake GIANTS is a story about climbing in the high country of Colorado. Mt. Evans is a world renowned bouldering destination and the newest development has been at Lincoln Lake near the summit of the 14,000 Ft Mountain.

In Chapter 1, we witness our heroes braving the rugged tundra of Mt. Evans to clash heatedly with the most inspiring blocks of granite they can find. Unbeknownst to them, large, ill-spirited residents of the lake lurk nearby. In Chapter 2, our heroes again seek boulders to conquer, mauling their skin and spilling blood on the way to their noble achievements! Following the grisly discovery of a certain boney pelvis, they realize there is more to Lincoln Lake than they could have ever imagined. Chapter 3 portrays our heroes slaying yet more classic boulders! Sadly, the slayers become the slain, as a resident Giant (of the Lincoln Lake species) begins terrorizing the unlucky climbers. Much blood is shed from our heroes’ shapely, toned bodies. Even so, their deaths arrive awash in honor, ridden with glory.

In Chapter 4, our two remaining climbers experience a massive resurgence of psych, even in the wake of their friends’ atrocious murders. The surrounding boulders are simply too enticing. And fortunately for one of our heroes, even a member of the vicious race of Lincoln Lake Giant can display forgivable amicability.

The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro rocks Central Park 2011 from NE2C on Vimeo.
The Unified Bouldering Championships Pro Tour brought the first-ever pro climbing competition to New York's Central Park with the Eastern Mountain Sports Pro on Saturday, June 25th, 2011.

Thousands and thousands of New Yorkers gathered to witness an amazing display of athleticism and drama from the world's best climbers. The crowd collectively held their breath, gasped, screamed and fist pumped the competitors on to their absolute limits. Feeding off the crowd's infectious energy, Vasya Vorotnikov and Angie Payne turned in inspired performances and snagged mens and womens first place victories.

On this day, pro climbing captured the attention of thousands of new fans and even found it's way into one of the world's most acclaimed publications, The New York Times. The sport of climbing was on display for all to see in front of one of the world's largest most influential audiences, New York City, and the result was a resoundingly huge success. Climbing represented itself to be every bit as worthy of delivering the energy, drama, excitement and athleticism expected from a major sporting event.
