Rustam Gelmanov and Anna Stöhr are the 2012 Boulder World Cup winners For Rustam a fourth place was enough because Kilian Fischhuber was already eliminated in Saturday's qualifying. (a tiny mistake in the first problem as you can see in the video) The day's victory in Munich fell to the flawlessly climbing Akiyo Noguchi from Japan and Dmitrii Sharafutdinov from Russia, who is suddenly in world-championship-shape again. Very pleasing from a German perspective: Juliane Wurm climbed to the podium, taking only 3 tries more than Akiyo and one more than Anna. In the men Sean McColl from Canada and Jakob Schubert from Austria finished second and third.

Perfect conditions in the final rounds and the biggest athletes participation attracted a huge audience response. 65 men and 51 women from 28 nations went to the start. A total of around 15,000 people wanted to see their performances. They were not disappointed: the finale at around 20 degrees and light winds prevailed perfect conditions for bouldering.

http://www.bergleben.de/klettern - In the great final of the boulder world cup 2012 in munich Dmitrii Sharafutdinov won ahead of the strong Canadian Sean McColl and Jakob Schubert from Austria. The Russian won also last year in Munich and topped out all four final boulders. Only one try more for reaching the four bonus holds was responsible for McColls lost - he was not able to climb only one boulder in the whole competition. Kilian Fischhuber didn´t reach the semifinal so Rustam Gelmanov won the Overall Boulder World Cup 2012 ahead of the two austrian climbers Fischhuber and Schubert. The germans managed to reach semifinal with three athletes (Baumann, Danker, Conrad) and finished on the places 10, 13 & 18.

Sean McColl's flash of the men's "tie-break-problem" of the adidas RockStars 2012 is one of the most impressive bouldering performance ever!

Highlights of the adidas rockstars 2012 – Porsche Arena Stuttgart from world of freesports on Vimeo.

In a thrilling final, which could hardly be outgunned in terms of drama, Alex Puccio from the USA and Sean McColl from Canada claimed the highly paid title adidas ROCKSTAR 2012 this weekend. Around 70 of the world’s best bouldering athletes from 20 different countries travelled to Stuttgart, Germany, to experience a top-class bouldering competition. On a giant stage with catwalk and live band the pro climbers felt like rock stars. And that’s exactly the objective of the event, which combines rock climbing with rock music to stage an intoxicating sports show.

The quality of the routes is vital for a good competition. After all, adidas ROCKSTARS wants to demonstrate the skills of the international boulder elite. At the same time the route setters try to live up to the interests of spectators and the media. That asks for instinct feel. Boulders have to be set in a fair way with equal opportunities for all athletes. At the same time they should severely test the skills of the competitor: flexibility, strength, endurance, creativity, orientation. In an ideal case only one athlete masters the most difficult problem. But if the boulders are too tough, it could backfire. This is when many years of competition and route setting experience come into play - it also helps to deal with the pressure.

Shauna Coxsey (GBR) and Sean McColl (CAN) - silver, Juliane Wurm (GER) and Jan Hojer (GER) - bronze, could not prevail on the Austrian super-couple. The boulder World Cup finals will take place in Munich, on August 25 and 26.

The future is female! This is why we invited eight very different female climbers from very different climbing backgrounds to compete in udini's unique "screw-it-yourself" format.
Julia Winter from Dresden finally became the undisputed winner of this intense but friendly and incredibly attractive event. What the results don't tell you is how homogeneous the climbing skills of the invited climbers where. Women seem to be the better course setters too: everybody climbed her own problem! The prize for the nicest problem (#8) went to Vera Zijlstra who is an stunning talent in this field, she put it up in only 30 minutes!!! While nobody could repeat Barbara Zangerl's, Juliane Wurm's and Angelica Lind's problem, everybody enjoyed Layla Mammi's #5.
"Hi Udo,
Just wanted to say thank you once again for everything!
Thanks for that you made it possible for me to come to the competiton and thanks for the nice event!
I had a really great time :-) Hope you are also satisfied!
Good luck for the future!"

The IFSC Bouldering World Cup closed last Saturday with the event in Munich, Germany. The competition awarded the World Cup titles to the Austrians Anna Stöhr -- winner of the World Championship in Arco -- and to Kilian Fischhuber, although neither of them stepped up for the first place in Munich. In the women's field, the Slovenian Mina Markovic gains the gold medal with 3 tops 3 out of 4; the home athlete Juliane Wurm, galvanized by her public, sends one boulder more than Anna Stöhr and thus gets the silver medal, with Stohr in third place. The Russian Dmitry Sharafutdinov, World Champion in Arco, shows again his great shape with four boulders climbed on first attempt; but most impressive is the fact that only Russian athletes are on the podium at the last bouldering competition of the year: Rustam Gelmanov is second, and Alexey Rubtsov is third.

Anna Stöhr's way through the (semi-) Finals towards being bouldering world champion 2011. Unlike at the BWCs, the organizers made it difficult to film for anybody who didn't pay for TV rights. We hope you'll enjoy this little clip nevertheless!
The Arco World Championships was a two faced affair, at least concerning the bouldering. On the bright side was solid route setting, stunning performances and the realization how high the standard is meanwhile, especially in countries that usually don't compete in the world cups (for many reasons). On the dark side we an arrogant organization that was unable to cope with the many competitors and clearly not interested in bouldering at all. Lets start with the bright side though!

We have 2 well-deserved winners!
Bouldering World Championships have their own rule, one is, "they all boulder well, and in the end a russian boy wins!" (as it has been from 2005 on). When Rustam Gelmanov and Dmitry Sharafutdinov executed their first problems in the semis it became clear to all their competitors that they intended to write this rule in stone.
The same is not quite true for the girls, but how Yana Chereshneva and Olga Bibik managed to show this year's best performances when it is the most important is a secret all other athletes and coaches would like to know! They both climbed easier into the final than ... Anna, who was on the brink of repeating "the best unsuccessful climbing you can possibly see" as in Sheffield and Barcelona. In the semis she cruised problem 1-3 only to be stopped with the delicate match on problem #4. The semis were again dominated by Jule Wurm who is clearly the strongest female climber around without a mayor title!

The cards are re-shuffled (at least for the non-russians)
Anna Stöhr, who just had had one of her darkest moments when she couldn't do problem #4 in the semis was a different person in the finals and put up an almost flawless performance. She was the undisputed winner in the finals. Second became the very well climbing Sasha Digiulian, who apparently benefited from the rather conventional route setting and, most of all, not expecting too much! That seemed to be the problem of Jule, who temporarily lost her Mojo in the finals and ended up on third place. The tragic hero of the finals though was Akiyo Noguchi who, on problem #1, forgot everything she knows about bouldering! In the world cups Akiyo always has been "the girls without nerves" - but here in Arco, on that Sunday afternoon ... well, we are all human beings and no machines after all!
That is, except Dmitry! Hindered only by the weird politics of his home country to give Kilian a run for the world cup, he was in every second and on every problem the alpha male of the comp and became world champion for the second time after 2007. Rustam also kept on climbing brilliantly but had to let Adam Ondra pass and took the bronze medal. And how about Kilian? A Akiyoesque Mojo loss I would say! The most successful competition climber of all times has to wait for his first world championship title till next year in Paris. Good luck, Kilian!

"If water is scarce, drink less and it will last longer"
- Angelo Seneci, MC of the Arco Rockmaster and apparently put into the position of a feudalistic
emperor for these world championships, when being informed that there is not enough water in the isolation zone.
I'm not psyched to write about the dark aspects of this event and not interested in all the politics, but if Arco was a glimpse into what happens if climbing becomes Olympic - sign me out! Angelo's quote pretty much sums his personality up, for him the athletes are just the ticket for selling TV rights. It was heart wrenching to see competitors from countries like Peru or Iran arriving 2 minutes late at their problem, misguided by the over-extended personnel, while Angelo chased competitors off places he thinks they don't belong. That happened for example to Anna just after winning and taking place at the always empty "VIP" seats.
All of Angelo's efforts to put up a good show and to sell TV rights with it of course brings our sport forward, who knows if the next great climber wasn't in front of a TV, getting inspired by what he/she saw?
That the IFSC gave Angelo full reign over their championships though is a sign of weakness in my book though, lets hope that future championships will be about sport first and TV events second!

IFSC Bouldering World Cup 2011 | Sheffield from Ed Ratcliffe [Slender Films] on Vimeo.

Last weekend in Sheffield the Austrian Kilian Fischhuber assured the World Cup 2011 with his 5th victory, which brought him to 560 points in the 2011 ranking - with his direct rival Sharafutdinov following at 430, and one competition left to close the Boulder World Cup 2011.
Second on the podium Cedric Lachat (SUI), third the Russian Alexey Rubtsov, with respectively 5 and 13 attempts to complete 2 problems.
Gold in the women's field was awarded to Akiyo Noguchi (JPN), at her 4th victory of the year; nevertheless, Anna Stöhr (6th in Sheffield) remains at the top of the 2011 ranking. Silver goes to the French Melissa Le Neve, and bronze to Alex Puccio (USA).
The Boulder World Cup will be back with the final competition in Munich in August; but all the best climbers will gather in two weeks in Arco for the IFSC World Championship...

The penultimate round of the IFSC Boulder World Cup hit Sheffield on the 2nd and 3rd July 2011. The competition took place as part of the Cliffhanger festival and the women's finals were held on the Sunday.

■Boulder WC 2010 report #3 - Vail

Perfect bouldering conditions, an impressively high wall and very interesting route setting - Vail felt like a Highlight of the 2010 Bouldering World Cup so far! To keep things interesting, Kilian Fischhuber had a painful but (hopefully) harmless accident just before the comp. It would have been interesting to compare a 100% fit Kilian to the impressive Daniel Woods on that wall. Daniel was the only one to complete problem #2 in the finals and was the undisputed winner. For the future, lets all hope for a Ondra-Woods-Fischhuber-Hori conference with Jernej Kruder (wow, what a performance !!!) and any of the strong British and French boys thrown in for comparision!
Three of last years strongest are not showing their true potential yet, if Jonas Baumann, Gabri Moroni and Rustam Gelmanov will wake up the Boulder WC picks up even more steam.
When in Vienna everybody thought the Asian girls' patience and precission was the only key to success, in Vail things were quite different. Problems were burly and you had to move fast. Anna Stöhr is in a class of her own in that style, using momentum like none of the other girls. She didn't win the comp because of a slip on a slab and marks the other end of the spectrum from the Asian style. Right in the middle style wise sits female winner Chloé Graftiaux who climbs equally well in all styles and has the least weaknesses. Fingers crossed for up-to-the task route setting when the Johnson-Stöhr-Graftiaux-Wurm-Kim-Noguchi-Puccio-Oda etc. etc. conference takes place since the female events seem to be more determined by the quality of the route setting! Whoever route setter wants to be voted "route setter of the season" will be judged by his Girls problems!

August.
