"Vegas Gold" Desert Gold 5.13a from Cedar Wright on Vimeo.
Made it down to Vegas for the Red Rock Rendezvous, and then afterward made it up to Desert Gold, one of the most difficult and beautiful cracks in Red Rocks. I was super psyched on my second day to send first try, but not without getting pumped out of my gourd dangling out the fifteen foot roof crack that caps the hard overhanging fingers. This is certainly a mega classic, and I encourage anyone who is into hard cracks to give it a whirl!!!

The finals will be held outdoors at the Boulder Reservoir on a giant new wall designed by Walltopia. Because this comp is not affiliated with any governing organizations of competitive climbing, the Spot has put together a Fresh and more Audience Friendly format that will culminate with a "First Ascent" battle between the two top climbers. Some of the best competitive climbers in the U.S. live in Boulder and will be at the comp, including Alex Puccio and Daniel Woods, so you should definitely try to catch what will be the most original and fun comp of the year. Not only will this comp be free to spectators, it will be set in a beautiful location at the Boulder Reservoir with the flat irons as a dramatic backdrop for the process of elimination first ascent battle that will ensue. This promises to be one of the best, most audience friendly comps ever hosted in the U.S. complete with a fresh new format and a festival like atmosphere. When is a rock climb too hard, the holds too small, the cracks too thin? Black Diamond athletes Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson pushed those physical and mental boundaries to the limit this past fall when they spent nearly two months attempting to free a line on El Capitan’s southeast face, a 900-meter route (linking up sections of the Dawn Wall and Mescalito) that is likely the hardest big wall free climb in the world, mind-bogglingly stacked with numerous 5.14 pitches.■VIDEO Part 2: BD athletes Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson attempting to free El Cap's hardest climb

■People - The Spirit of Squamish

Toni Lamprecht: Freedom from Prana Living on Vimeo.
Toni Lamprecht started climbing when he was 4 or 5 with his father on little boulders and when they hiked in the mountains. At age 12, he started to think more seriously about Alpine stuff and by the time Toni was 14 he finally discovered climbing and he turned into a self proclaimed climbing-junkie. It was all he dreamed about. Toni submersed himself in any kind of climbing he could every day (bouldering, sport or alpine). He really wanted to collect hard sport routes from all over Europe, make first ascents and tick off some of the important limestone alpine routes on the northern rim of the Alps.
In 1992, a trip around the world changed his focus on climbing from numbers, ratings and competitions to adventure. Toni began to concentrate more on the climbing experience, the personal limits and the forces of nature. He felt fortunate that his climbing trips allowed him to visit many climbing areas in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. He feels it is important to immerse himself into the different cultures and take advantage of his opportunities.
About that same time, Toni began to work with handicapped children and found that learning from this very special group of people gave his life a completely new source of motivation. So while still addicted to climbing, he began to focus more on his studies & teaching children. Toni finished his studies in 1999 and passed the Staatsexamen, a German government licensing examination. That was a busy year as he also released his first book, Climbing with Mentally Retarded People and began to work as a teacher for troubled kids in Munich.
Toni has played in 3 bands, still loves adventure climbing, bouldering and finding beautiful spots for deep water soloing. He feels lucky to have been on the road for so many years always climbing with nice people. He also continues to be inspired by untouched rock in a fascinating landscape and climbing with good friends. Besides climbing, Toni likes surfing, skiing, playing music and of course spending time with his lovely wife Margit.

Early this march I headed out to Arkansas to give a presentation with Jeremy Collins for the American Alpine Club. I showed up a day early to get some climbing in and brought my GH1 to play with. I shot and edited this piece in a day, so that I could show the video at the beginning of my presentation....I was literally doing color correction and compressing an hour before I went on!!! People were psyched to see their home area on the big screen!
It turns out that the climbing and scene in Arkansas not to be missed...I highly recommend a visit to Horseshoe Ranch, one of the most unique climber camps in the country. Today I was too knackered to climb, but I got to shoot a 38 special...that was different!!!

Black Diamond athlete Chris Schulte sent us the following note and video regarding a recent "off-season" visit to some alpine boulders near Lake Tahoe. After a bit of shoveling and cleaning Schulte scored a great repeat of what looks to be a classic line.

This video is of footage of a profound year in rock climbing for me. I have accomplished major goals that I have had for years and I am proud to have this high quality segment of some of them. It is a great honor to represent the best shoe company in the world and with these proper tools I am more confident in my future goals. THANKS to La Sportiva.
The first route is a Randy Leavitt Route called Jumbo Pumping Hate, which is at Mount Clark, California. The route sits directly left of the notorious Jumbo Love 5.15b that was climbed last year by Chris Sharma. It is the best 5.14a I have ever climbed and enjoyed the intensity in doing it quickly. There are two major cruxes and LOTS of air below you which adds to the entire experience. This area as a whole is a very inspirational place due to the location and the immensity of the cliffs. They are HUGE with shields of solid white limestone. You are lucky to see another person up there and respect anyone that makes the effort being in the middle of the desert off of a arduous 4X4 road.
The second is a unique V10 boulder problem in Castle Rock, Idaho. It’s granite roof with holds and gymnastic climbing which is very rare when it comes to the medium of granite. I enjoyed the aesthetics of this one and had to include it.
Bovice V12 is a first ascent I made in Southern Utah. I put about five sessions into this one and completed it right before the temperatures in the desert got above 100 degress. There are many moves and climbs similar to a route, with a few defined cruxes where you fall near the end. It feels like you should be clipping bolts on this line since it is so long. When I completed this route it was late at night and I topped out in the dark.
And… The last route in the video is one of my hardest yet. I called this route “The Re-Up” and graded it 5.14d. This is a very challenging route with one rest separating two 14b/c sections. The Re-Up is an important route to me in from the effort it required, the fact that I equipped it, and the continuous-bouldery-style. The Re-Up was a great experience from putting in the bolts to clipping the chains and will remain one of my best efforts.
